I had selected my granite years ago - quarried in Wisconsin. I picked Lavender Gray for the kitchen and bar and Wisconsin Red for the master bath. But I hadn't given much thought to the laminate for the rest of the house.

Laminate is another selection that can take forever. At this point I had the floors picked out, the cabinet stain picked and the tile picked and now I needed to address the counter tops for the guest bathroom, the laundry room, the lower level kitchen and the lower level bathroom and sauna changing room bench. It is very fortunate that the laminate companies will send larger samples free on request because I can't image trying to pick out a pattern/color based on a 1-1/2" x 2" sample that are on those sample boards at Home Depot, Lowes and Menards - or your local cabinet maker.

Going to the Spring Showcase of Homes (before covid-19 hit) was really helpful. I ended up picking 2 of the laminate colors based on what I saw there. The counter for the lower level just seemed right based on the color of the cabinets. It also worked for the laundry.

On March 2nd I went to the Anderson Brothers & Johnson quarry north of Wausau to pick out my granite slabs. The Wisconsin Red is very consistent so I wasn't too concerned about picking a slab of that. But the Lavender Gray has loads of movement and patterns in it. It turned out that they didn't have much inventory so I really didn't have much choice. And the slabs were from the same block so they all looked pretty much the same. Nevertheless I was very pleased with it. Here's a photo:
